Severe Orf in Lambs: Clinical Description and Response to Treatment against Secondary Infection

چکیده
In May 2014, severe disease affecting areas around the muzzle and the entire buccal mucosa was observed in two lambs from a flock of approximately 200 Highlander and Charolaise ewes. The lambs were ten weeks old. Clinical signs ofproliferative lesions around the mucocutanous junction of the mouth and the presence of scabs extending for 4 to 6 cm around the muzzlewere supportive of severe orf. No laboratory test was undertaken. It was therefore deemed necessary to offer treatment against secondary infection. Both lambs responded very well to a combination of 200mg/kg procaine penicillin and 250mg/kg body weight dihydrostreptomycin sulphateand 1,5 pentanedial in petroleum based soft emollient cream administered once daily for three consecutive days. The treatment regime showed that secondary infection during severe orf cases can be treated with penicillin-streptomycin and petroleum based soft emollient cream in order to reduce losses associated with the disease.

Immune response of lambs to experimental infection with Orf virus.
A group of six specific pathogen free (SPF) lambs were infected epidermally with Orf virus. Seven weeks later they were reinfected. For a period of 4 weeks after each inoculation they were observed clinically and blood was collected for analysis of virus specific antibody measured by ELISA and peripheral blood lymphocyte (PBL) proliferative response to various viral antigens. After the primary ...
متن کاملAntibody response against hydatid fluid, protoscolex and whole body of Echinococcus granulosus antigens in lambs
In this study, the immunogenicity of three types of antigens (hydatid fluid, protoscolices and whole body of E. granulosus) was investigated in lambs by ELISA. Sixteen 4–6-month-old lambs of mixed sexes were divided into 4 groups of 4 lambs (three immunized and one control group). Twelve lambs as immunized groups received 2 mg of hydatid fluid, protoscolices and whole body of E. granulosus ant...

Porcine necrotic ear syndrome (PNES) in pigs has been reported as an increasing health problem in many countries with intensive pig farming. The etiology of this disease is complex and the presumed triggering factors can be divided into infectious and non-infectious agents. The present report describes a case of Porcine Circovirus type 2 (PCV2), infection associated with lesions of PNES at the ...

Orf, also known as contagious ecthyma or contagious pustular dermatitis, is a viral skin infection caused by a parapoxvirus (1).
